What is SI?

CONCEPT

SI is an international organization consisted by women who are in managerial posts or profession.
We do social services for women and girls to improve their life all over the world.

Through international goodwill, understanding, and friendship, we aim to improve women’s position, have higher morals, protect human rights, and promote equality, development, and peace.

※SOROPTIMIST is a coinage from SOROR(sister) and OPTIMA(best) and means BEST FOR WOMEN.

HISTORY

1921—First Soroptimist Club was established in California by 80 women working in various fields.
1924—Soroptimist Club was admitted in London.
1960—First Japanese Soroptimist Club was established in Tokyo.
1976—Kayoko Sen, founder governer, promoted Japanese Soroptimist Club and it made dramatic progress.
Then, in Boston contest, it was admitted as Japan region of America Association when the number of Japanese clubs reached 55.
1978—SI Kurume was admitted.
1979—Japanese Soroptimist Foundation was established.
1986—Japanese region was divided into 5 regions, north, east, central, west, south.
1986—Japan Minami region started in 7 prefecture of Kyusyu and Okinawa.
Now, under Hiroko Nagayama’s leadership, 94 clubs(about 2600 members) are doing social services for women and girls to improve their life.
2006—SI Kurume AURA was admitted in 21 members as 2nd club in Kurume.
SI Kurume AURA do various services with global view, following SI Kurume.

STRUCTURE of SI

SI is consisted by 4 federation(3200 clubs and 89000 members in 125 countries).
America federation which Japanese Soroptimist belongs has 28 regions.
Now, 1430 clubs, 38000 members are working in its regions.
There are 5 regions, 538 clubs, and 14000 members in Japan.
There are 94 clubs and 2600 members in Japan Minami region.
